A kiszáradás és a túláradás egyszerre fenyegeti a Holt-tengert
A tenger északi medencéjének vízszintje közel 1,2 méterrel csökken évente, nagyrészt a beömlő Jordán folyó vízhozamának megcsappanása miatt. A magasabban fekvő déli rész szintje eközben évi mintegy 20 centiméterrel emelkedik. Ez utóbbinak kiváltó oka a jelentős ipari tevékenység, nevezetesen az értékes ásványi anyagok kitermelése.
